Biker Down on Knickerbocker Road
A motorcycle driver was injured on Knickerbocker Rd. this evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. It appears the cyclist collided with the rear passenger door on the driver’s side of a high-end SUV.
When our reporter arrived at the scene, San Angelo FD EMS was loading an injured motorcyclist into an ambulance at the intersection of Knickerbocker Rd. and Red Bluff Rd. The motorcycle was located 30 yards towards Lake Nasworthy in the middle of the four-lane road, well past the abeam point of Packsaddle Barbecue.
San Angelo Police Department CSI was seen at the crash scene, signifying this crash may have involved significant injuries.
The type of motorcycle is a classic trim, possibly a late model Harley Davidson with large tires.
Update 8:10 p.m.
San Angelo Police traffic investigator Stephen Quade said the motorcyclist was traveling southwest in the inside lane of Knickerbocker. A silver 2015 Infinity SUV (it looked like a QX-80) was turning left (northeast) onto Knickerbocker from Red Bluff Rd.
Quade said his initial investigation found the motorcyclist was traveling at, or near, the speed limit and did not see the Infinity pulling out in front of him soon enough. Quade said the cyclist locked his brakes, attempting to avoid the collision.
Upon impact at the Red Bluff intersection, the motorcyclist was immediately thrown from the bike, and the bike traveled another 30-40 yards ahead before falling over in the middle turn lane of Knickerbocker past Packsaddle Barbecue.
Quade said the motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries that were serious in nature. The motorcyclist is at Shannon Medical Center.
This intersection has been the location of a number of crashes over the past three years. Some residents and retail store owners and managers who live and work in the area have asked for a traffic light to be placed there. TxDOT maintains Knickerbocker Rd., not the City of San Angelo.
The type of motorcycle is unknown. It appeared to be in the 600-1100 cc size category.
Quade said he has not issued any citations and is not near determining if any should be at this early stage of the investigation.
