Young Man Dies in Saturday Morning Crash South of Abilene

A 20-year-old man was killed in a crash 20 miles south of Abilene Saturday morning.

According to Texas DPS, Austin Riley McCombs, 20, of San Angelo (see note) was southbound on U.S. 277 at approximately 8:59 a.m. in his 2004 Lexus passenger car. In the oncoming lane, William Allen Adamson, 42, of San Angelo was northbound in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

The approximate location of the crash:

Adamson lost control of the Silverado on the wet pavement in the rain and slid into the southbound lanes, crashing into McCombs’ Lexus.

Adamson was injured and transported to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. The only passenger in the Lexus, Joseph Shane Bradley, male, 41, of San Angelo, was seriously injured and was also rushed to Hendrick.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and it was raining at the time of the crash. The speed limit is 65 mph along this stretch of the highway, DPS reported.

Update: Sept. 22 @ 2:45 p.m.

Sgt. Frederick Biddle with DPS in Abilene said today that the passengers were listed out of order on the initial report released on this crash by DPS on Sept. 12. Joseph Bradley, 41, of San Angelo was the passenger in the Chevrolet pickup, not the Lexus.

Note: A DPS press release with the official statement on this crash said Austin Riley McCombs is from San Angelo; however, family states he is from Abilene and was traveling to San Angelo. On Sunday, DPS verified that McCombs' address showed in San Angelo, which is why the information listed as such.
