SAN ANGELO, TX — The crash victim and driver was under the influence of alcohol when she rolled her 2002 black Chevrolet Tahoe multiple times on N. Bryant between Starbucks and Julio’s Burritos near the 4th St. intersection on Aug. 25 (original story here).
According to the San Angelo Police Department, responding officers found 35-year-old Janice Burgess lying in the restaurant’s parking lot. Nearby, her Tahoe was situated on its side after rolling over multiple times. Police report the 35-year-old woman was thrown 100 feet from the vehicle.
She was rushed to Shannon Medical Center for treatment. She has since been released, police report.
SAPD Traffic Investigators suspected Burgess to be under the influence of alcohol. They obtained a search warrant and drew blood at the hospital. The results of that test were obtained by police recently and indicate she had a blood alcohol content of 0.16, or twice the legal limit.
During the crash investigation, Police learned Burgess was traveling north on N Bryant Blvd. at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her black 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. The Tahoe went into a skid and rolled over multiple times.
At the crash scene, police spokesman Sgt. Cade Solsbery stated that moments before the crash a patrol officer witnessed the northbound speeding Tahoe and began a pursuit. The pursuing officer cancelled the chase because he determined a high-speed chase through the middle of town would place more citizens in jeopardy.
Police report Burgess was not wearing a seatbelt. There was also alcohol fund inside the vehicle, police noted.
Burgess was the sole occupant of the vehicle that crashed and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
So far, Burgess was charged after the incident with Speeding 25 mph and Over, having no insurance, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
More charges are likely. Police report that the investigation is not yet complete.
