73-Year-Old Eastland County Deputy Dies in Crash

EASTLAND COUNTY, TX – This morning, a two-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 73-year-old Department of Public Safety Deputy, Kenneth Hubert Maltby of Eastland.

DPS officials said at 8:04 a.m., Colton James Conger, 23, of Eastland, was traveling eastbound on FM 570, 1.5 miles west of Eastland. At that time, Deputy Maltby was traveling westbound in a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe when Conger’s vehicle struck his head on (left front to left front).

Deputy Maltby was on duty at the time, said DPS. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was taken to Edwards Funeral Home. He did have his seat belt on.

Conger suffered non-incapacitating injuries. He too had his seat belt on at the time of the crash.

DPS Trooper Russell Reid in Eastland investigated the scene. The speed limit in the area is 70 miles per hour, and the weather and road conditions were clear and dry.
