Mesquite Tree and Driver Suffer Minor Injuries After Collision in North San Angelo

A mesquite tree and a San Angelo driver suffered minor injuries after a one-vehicle crash in the 700 block of W. 14th St.

Officer Brian Bylsma, with the San Angelo Police Department’s Traffic Division, said he was dispatched to the area for a major vehicle crash involving a truck and a tree.

Upon arrival, and in talking to the driver, he learned the city had a crew in the area preparing to do work on the roadway. The work crew had cones set to deter traffic to the right side of the road.

“This box truck ended up going to the right, and when it did, it ended up hitting a branch that belongs to the mesquite tree overhanging from the road,” said Officer Bylsma. “He ended up hitting it and coming to the side of the road.”

Officer Bylsma stated the driver received slight injuries, but he refused medical treatment at the scene. The tree also suffered some cracked limbs.

Officer Bylsma added that no citations have been issued thus far.

As I recall, there is a CITY ORDINANCE which REQUIRES a certain minimum height clearance over the curb-line of any vehicular right-of-way to which ALL tree limbs and other obstructions MUST BE MAINTAINED. Although I do not specifically recall at this time if it is the CITY or the PROPERTY OWNER who is responsible for this maintenance, fault can always belay the City for failure to cite and/or correct offending intrusions.

*** Sounds like a GOOD TOPIC for San Angelo LIVE to research and publish an article on IMHO.
