2 Dead in Crash Near a Wet and Rainy Coleman

Two people are dead following a crash on U.S. 84 one mile east of Coleman.

According to the Texas DPS, Roberto A Rodriguez, 37 of Mission was driving a Chevrolet 1500 pickup eastbound on U.S. 84 when he lost control due to hydroplaning on the wet surface. His truck slid across the roadway into the oncoming westbound lanes.

The approximate location of the crash:

Rodriguez’s truck hit the left front of a westbound Chevrolet Cruze driven by Brittany Dawn Grove of Voss.

From the impact, Rodriguez’s truck bounced off Grove’s Cruz and struck a second westbound vehicle, a 2015 Ford Taurus driven by Matthew Wayne Stump of Round Rock.

Both the Cruze and the Taurus ended up in the barrow ditch next to the roadway. Rodriguez’s Chevy truck came to a stop in the center of the roadway.

Brittany Grove and Roberto Rodriguez were pronounced dead at the scene.  Rodriguez’s passenger, Alejandro Soto Ayala, 60 of Pharr, was transported to Shannon Medical Center with incapacitating injuries. The Taurus driver, Matthew Stump, was treated and released at the scene.

The crash happened April 18 at 2 p.m. It was raining and the roadway was wet, DPS reported. The speed limit on this stretch of roadway is 75 mph. Trooper Clinton Hounshell of the Coleman district was the investigator.
