A Grape Creek homeowner is happy that no one was hurt after a driver crashed into the tree in her front yard.
Gaylene Burfield said she was sitting in her den watching television right before noon when she heard a loud noise.
“I came out here and this is what I saw,” she said, referring to a pickup crashed into her 25-year-old tree.
Burfield said she witnessed a female driver getting out of the driver’s side and the passenger leaving the scene.
Officer Brian Bylsma, with the San Angelo Police Department Traffic Division, said he was dispatched to an unknown motor vehicle accident in the 3700 block of Grape Creek Road.
“Upon arrival, there was a single vehicle that ran off the road, took out a mailbox, sideswiped a telephone pole, and ended up hitting a tree,” said Officer Bylsma.
He said the vehicle, operated by a young female, is a 1986 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. There was a passenger, but, as the homeowner stated, he left the scene.
“He identified himself to me on the phone, and he indicated he’s not hurt,” said Officer Bylsma. The Officer said since the male was a passenger, leaving the scene isn’t a crime.
Bylsma also said because of the way the driver was talking, officers had some concerns, so they initiated a sobriety test. It turned out, however, that she has a disability. The tests came out fine.
The driver was cited for no insurance, failure to control speed and driving with a suspended license.
