At approximately 4:00 p.m. today at the intersection of 28th and N. Magdalen Streets, a 17-year-old driver failed to yield the right of way and collided with a car carrying five people, including juveniles.
Officer Brian Bylsma of the San Angelo Police Department, said he was originally called out to a hit and run at the intersection. While en route to the scene, he was told that the other party had called in and was heading back to the crash site.
Bylsma said a silver 2004 Kia Optima that was southbound on Magdalen St. and a 2006 white Mazda 6 was eastbound onto E. 28th St. The intersection is an open intersection, and has no stop or yield signs. The Mazda driver believed the Kia driver had a signal on to turn right onto 28th St. The Mazda driver pulled out into the intersection attempting to turn north onto Magdalen. The Kia, either wasn't planning on turning or changed her mind, and continued southbound, hence the collision at the intersection.
Bylsma said there were five occupants in the Kia, and two of them were transported to Community Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The three children in the back were not hurt. Also, the occupant in the Mazda was not hurt.
The driver of the Mazda was issued a citation for not yielding the right-of-way from an open intersection. The driver of the Kia was issued two citations for not having two 5-year-old juveniles in child booster seats.
Note: Two children were not injured in this crash. Two occupants were injured, however, and transported to Community Medical Center. The story has been corrected.
