One Killed When Two Semis Collide Near Pecos

Early this morning, an El Paso trucker was killed after he fell asleep and collided his semi with another truck tractor pulling a semi trailer.

According to Texas DPS, Charlie Hardy, 49, of El Paso was driving his 2006 Peterbilt Model 379 pulling a tank full of crude oil eastbound on RM 652 just after 3:30 a.m. today.

Approximate location of the crash:

DPS posits that Hardy fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into the oncoming westbound lane.

Oncoming traffic was Urquiola Antonio Gusto, 50, of Hobbs, New Mexico. He was driving a 2014 Mack truck hauling a semi trailer full of water westbound. DPS reported that Gusto performed evasive action, but was unable to prevent colliding with Hardy’s Peterbilt.

Justice of the Peace Heriberto Rodriguez of Reeves County pronounced Hardy dead at the scene.

The crash happened three miles west of Orla on RM 652.
