Wall High School Student in Critical Condition After Collision on US 277

At approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning, San Angelo Police responded to a rollover crash with entrapment involving two Chevrolet pickup trucks on US 277 and Grand Canal Road, just south of San Angelo.

According to officials at the scene, a driver of one of the Chevy pickups was traveling south on US 277, and the other was crossing US 277 on Grand Canal heading eastbound. The driver traveling southbound t-boned the truck heading eastbound on the passenger side, which caused the vehicle to roll over.

Emergency responders had to use the Jaws of Life to extract the driver from the mangled pickup. When they brought him out, he appeared to be responsive; however, he was rushed to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

Officer Dornhecker with SAPD investigated the scene, and that investigation is ongoing. We will provide updates when received.

Update 11:17 a.m.

A Wall High School student is fighting for his life this morning after a collision on US 277 that happened at about 7:30 a.m. this morning.

Jonathan Taylor, approximately 16 years of age, was heading eastbound on US 277 to Wall High School in a gray 2008 Chevy pickup when the driver of a 2011 Chevy pickup t-boned his vehicle, causing it to roll over. Emergency personnel had to use the Jaws of Life to extract Taylor, and they transported him to Shannon Medical Center.

Sgt. Cade Solsbery, public information officer for SAPD, said Taylor is currently in critical condition. He's not sure what the next step is, but he will be in ICU.

"He's alive," said Solsbery.

Solsbery said Taylor suffered some broken bones, but he doesn't know what bones. He also has internal injuries, and a head injury from the impact.

"Hopefully, he'll make it through," Solsbery said. He added that it's a pretty good sign Taylor's hanging in there at this point.

The driver who hit him, 31-year-old Boyd Brotherton, was also transported to the hospital.

"He went to Shannon as well, but he's already been released," Solsbery said.

Solsbery noted that Taylor wore his seatbelt, which is extremely important in this case. In the previous crashes involving fatalities and serious injuries, including the one on Arden Road, the drivers and passengers weren't wearing their seatbelts.

"That's so important," Solsbery said.

He added that he will provide an update on Taylor's condition once it becomes available.

Update 3:56 p.m.

In an update this afternoon, Sgt. Solsbery, pio, said during the investigation of the crash, Officer M. Gesch and Sgt. Todd Dornhecker with Traffic Division learned that, after Taylor left the stop sign on Grand Canal to cross the intersection, he collided with Brotherton. When Taylor's vehicle rolled it eventually came to rest on its passenger side on the northbound side of S Hwy 277. Members of the San Angelo Fire Department had to extract Taylor from the vehicle.

Taylor sustained incapacitating injuries while Brotherton sustained non-incapacitating injuries. Both drivers wore their seatbelts. Both Gesch and Dornhecker determined through their investigation that Taylor failed to yield the right of way to Brotherton prior to the crash.

At this time, Taylor continues to fight for his life and remains in critical condition.
