Today, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Department of Public Safety announced that a TDCJ transport bus involved in a two-vehicle crash this morning killed one driver and injured 31 offenders and two correctional officers.
According to a press release, at 7:52 a.m. this morning, the TDCJ bus transporting inmates was traveling east on TX 36 while a white Ford pickup traveled south of FM 1702. The pickup failed to yield the right of way, pulling out in front of the bus. As a result, the bus crashed into the pickup, which came to rest in a field on the south side of TX 36. The bus spun around and rolled onto its right side and came to rest facing west.
DPS officials said the driver of the pickup, Kalyn Rae Brymer, 24, of Thorndale, TX, died at the scene and next of kin were notified. TDCJ officials said the 31 offenders and two correctional officers were transported from the scene with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. They were taken to hospitals in Fort Worth, Temple, Hamilton, Comanche, Brownwood and a TDCJ unit with an infirmary in Gatesville.
