Crash in Residential Area Sends One Speed Racer to the Hospital

After dealing with three back-to-back crashes within an hour, another call for a rollover crash on Campus and Colorado had San Angelo Police scrambling to another area of town.

At approximately 7:40 p.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to the stated area. Several people surrounded a black Mustang that rolled over into a yard.

One witness, Alexandria Park, said the driver of the black Mustang had passed her on Campus and Colorado. Park said she was heading to Young Life when the Mustang failed to stop at a yield sign and sped through the area and passed her. Park said the driver went so fast that her vehicle moved with the force of it. 

That’s when she heard the sound of metal colliding.

“I pulled down and back around because I heard the crash,” Park said.

Because the driver of the Mustang’s speed, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a black Toyota 4Runner, causing the SUV to hit another red 4Runner in front of it. As a result, the red SUV pushed forward and ended up three houses down from where it was parked.

Additionally, the driver lost control of his vehicle and rolled over into a yard three houses down.

The driver did receive injuries in the rollover and was transported to an area hospital with unconfirmed injuries.

Currently, Campus and Colorado is blocked off, so residents who live in the area want to find an alternate route to get to their homes.

Update 9:30 p.m.

Officer Quade, with SAPD, said there were two vehicles racing westbound on Avenue N. Officers attempted to stop both of them. One of the drivers failed to evade police, but the other vehicle, the 2005 Mustang, got away, and the driver, who Quade described as 19 or 20 years of age, turned off of Colorado, heading eastbound at a high rate of speed.

"He came through the intersection airborne and struck the black 4Runner parked in the street," Quade said. 

In turn, the black 4Runner hit a red GMC in front of it. Previously, the SUV was identified as another 4Runner; however, it was a GMC. That GMC ended up three houses down along with the driver of the Mustang. 

"He's got some pretty serious injuries at the moment," Quade said about the driver. Emergency personnel transported him to Shannon Medical Center where he is being treated for those injuries. Although serious, Quade clarified they were non-life-threatening.

Quade added that the man will be charged with racing, and other charges will be forthcoming. He said there were no signs of intoxication. 

Quade also said officials will be out at the scene for some time, so people in the area can expect the roads to remained blocked.
