Sherwood Way is set to be shut down from Arden Rd. to Oxford for several hours due to a gas leak, said the San Angelo Police Department.
Shelley Burnett, manager of Public Relations for Atmos Energy, said "There was some construction going on in the area, and we have a 6-inch line that's been cut. So here's what we do: we make the area safe with help from the Fire Department and the Police Department. We will then make repairs, so it's going to take a little while."
Although Burnett couldn't give an exact time, SAPD did confirm at 3:22 p.m. through a Nixle alert that repairs should take approximately four to five hours, so drivers will want to avoid the area.
"We'll get it back going as soon as possible," said Burnett. "Safety's our top priority."
Lynn Shipley, with H-E-B, said in support of the Fire Marshal, H-E-B will be closing its gas station due to the gas line main that was ruptured in front of Baskin-Robbins.
"We can't take any chance of sparks or anything igniting the gas," Shipley said.
Hopefully, by 7 or 7:30 p.m., the gas station will reopen, Shipley added.
