According to the Abilene Police Department, officers are on scene investigating a three-car crash on Highway 36. The incident occurred one mile south of the entrance to Abilene Regional Airport.
According to their report, a 71-year-old Abilene man was killed in the crash while three other people are transported to Hendrick Medical Center in varying conditions.
The preliminary crash investigation revealed that a southbound Dodge pickup attempted to execute a U-Turn in the 4000 Block of Highway 36. Before the U-Turn could be completed, the pickup was struck by a northbound sedan, leaving the sedan in the middle of the highway. Another vehicle, a northbound pickup, then entered the crash scene and struck the sedan broadside, killing the driver of the sedan and seriously injuring its other occupant. The driver of the northbound pickup was not seriously injured.
The two occupants of the southbound Dodge pickup (including a 3-year-old-child) were also transported to Hendrick Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Officials claim low visibility is believed to be a contributing factor in this incident.
Highway 36 is closed for the time being and traffic is being diverted at FM 1750 and FM 18. Please avoid the area as first responders are on scene and visibility is extremely low due to fog.
