San Angelo Teen in Critical Condition After Being Struck by Truck

A 16-year-old male is in critical condition after he was struck by a pickup truck late last night in north San Angelo.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., San Angelo Police responded to a traffic incident in the 3600 block of North Bryant Blvd. involving a white 1999 Chevy half-ton pickup and two teenage pedestrians. The teenagers were walking in the middle of the street when the driver of the pickup struck one of the teens, said Officer Mike Gesch with SAPD.

Officer Gesch stated the white pickup was driving southbound on Bryant when the incident occurred.

“The [teens] were in the center part of the southbound lane,” Gesch said. “They were walking northbound, but they were walking backwards because they were cold they said.”

The teenagers told Gesch they saw the lights of the truck and knew a vehicle was coming. One of the teens ran to the east side of the ride. The victim, however, attempted to run to the west side, but changed his mind and ran toward the east. That’s when he was struck.

The teenager did sustain injuries and was transported to Shannon Hospital, but Gesch said he did not know the severity of those injuries.

“He had a type of head injury,” he stated. “Anytime you have a head injury, you just don’t know for a while what will happen.”

After the collision, the truck’s driver, a 24-year-old male resident of Brady, used his truck to block oncoming traffic and attended to the victim until first responders arrived.  The driver and his female passenger were not injured from the collision, police said.

Officer Gesch added that no citations will be issued at this time, but the accident is still under investigation.

Please, please, please wear some sort of reflective gear or light colored clothing. I can't tell you how many times I have been driving at night and see someone dressed in dark blue or black, including a black hat. When walking at night have something reflective on your chest and back so that everyone can see you.

How about they don't walk down the middle of the street...at night...backwards...and then try to dodge a vehicle last minute.

I guess these idiots were never sixteen . How terrible and sad that the family of the youngster, who was injured , are having to live through this tragedy with the mealy mouths putting them down . You talk about parental influence and yet you sound as if you never had any . This is showing your true colors , no respect at all .
