According to a DPS press release, a 2002 Pace Arrow motor home, 2012 Dodge Ram and a 2012 Dodge Charger were all traveling north on FM 2288 when the trailer towed by the motor home detached. When it detached, the trailer entered into the southbound lane and struck a 2013 Nissan Sentra. After the trailer hit, the driver of the Sentra, Robbi Cox Hasty, 41, of San Angelo, lost control of her vehicle and spun around striking the Charger. The towed trailer then re-entered the northbound lane and struck the Dodge Ram.

DPS stated that Hasty was pronounced dead on scene by J.P. McGuire. The drivers and passenger of the other vehicles were not injured, and they were identified as follows:

  • 2002 Pace Arrow Motor Home: Driver: Gerald Glyn Brister, 75, of Lampass, Texas; Passenger: Jean Blackburn Brister, 75, of Lampass, Texas
  • 2012 Dodge Ram: Tonya Burton Bell, 51, of Carlsbad, Texas
  • 2012 Dodge Charger: Matthew Lee Walts, 30, of San Angelo, Texas

DPS noted that Hasty, Bell and Walts wore seatbelts; however, it’s unknown whether the Bristers did so. Additionally, the agency noted that weather conditions were dry and clear, and next of kin have been notified.

Walts is a DPS trooper who made the initial radio call to dispatch.

Assisting officers included Troopers Dustin Henderson, Hope Hohertz, Michael Johnson, Robert Aldrete, Scott Keane and Sergeant Tim Marlatt. Tom Green County Sheriff’s Department also assisted in the investigation.

Why did the Tom Green County Sheriff deputy parked in Grape Creek allow traffic to proceed down FM 2288 toward San Angelo knowing full well that the DPS had the road blocked at the scene of the accident? Except those heading home to Buffalo Heights, the remaining traffic had to turn around and go back to Grape Creek and detour to San Angelo via Highway 87. There is no excuse for wasting the time of those that had to tun around and go back to Grape Creek. Condolences to the family of Ms. Hasty.

Please for God's Sake go to dangeroustrailers.org and wake up.....the owner of the R.V. was towing a trailer with no safety chains..and no hitch pin....and the hitch failed...the trailer came off and now a 41 year old women was destroyed. They need to be sued...and so does he company that produced a crappy product.

Last Spring when the North Concho River flooded and FM 2288 was closed, some people drove all the way from San Angelo to Grape Creek before they found out they couldn't get through. Then they had to turn around and drive all the way back to San Angelo to return by Hwy 87. That's an extra 20 miles they didn't need to drive. All they needed to do was post a sign at the south end that said "ROAD CLOSED AT N CONCHO RIVER" or "TAKE HWY 87 TO GRAPE CREEK". Anything to let people know they couldn't go through. I agree that DPS should be proactive in this area, although they do an awesome job otherwise.

Ok I get that you might be upset that you had to drive an extra 25+ miles but seriously to take the time to come on here and rant about it.. DPS was probably more focused on the safety of drivers and securing the crash scene and debris field which was quite large, instead of stopping each car and asking them where they live or where they were going! This would have only put the officer and other drivers lives at risk to be rear ended by other drivers not paying attention. So I'm sorry that the tragic loss of a young mother/wife/fellow citizen inconvenienced you a little but get over it geez! Prayers for all involved and for our world who no longer has any empathy or sympathy for others especially if it causes a minor inconvenience for them. Ps sign up for nixie alerts and you would have known this in advance.
