Winters Crash Leaves One Person Dead

A 17-year-old male was pronounced dead Sunday morning after the driver of a 2006 Ford F350 pickup drifted off the roadway on U.S. Route 83, said a Department of Public Safety press release Monday.

According to the release, Cameron Doyle Cooper, 18, of Winters was traveling northbound on U.S. 83 when he drifted off the roadway to the east. Cooper lost control of the vehicle and over corrected to the left causing the vehicle to enter into a side skid and continue into the west side barrow ditch. The pickup then struck a cement post and a tree.

Cooper was transported to North Runnels Hospital in Winters with non-incapacitating injuries and is in stable condition. However, the passenger, James Scott Lange, also of Winters, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lange’s body was transported to Winters Funeral Home.

DPS stated Cooper wore his seatbelt, but Lange did not. The weather was clear and road conditions dry. At this time, the crash remains under investigation.
