Woman Loses Control of Vehicle: Trash Cans, Carport, Parked Cars, Oh My!

At approximately 8:15 a.m. Friday morning, a 56-year-old woman driving a white Ford pickup who went out to buy some breakfast burritos lost control of her vehicle in the 100 block of 25th Street and damaged fences, mailboxes and vehicles along the way, said San Angelo Police Officer Ed Hunger.

“For some reason, she swerved to the left. She mentioned some dogs,” explained Hunger.

When the driver swerved off the road, she hit a trash can and trash can holders; however, the damage didn’t stop there. After she hit the trash can and holders, the driver hit the gas instead of the break. Hunger said she ran over two more mail boxes on the left side of the street. She then swerved to the right side of the road and ran into a fence, hit the pickup that was parked in the carport, knocked the carport down, tore the back tire off the truck, came across and hit two more tin fences and a chain link fence, and hit two parked cars.

“After she came to a complete stop, she was still on the gas with her tires spinning,” Hunger said. “Apparently, she just panicked.”

Luckily, the driver, who lives in the area, didn’t sustain any injuries, and Hunger said no medical conditions were a factor in the crash; but as he did so, a woman came up to the officer and told him the driver is her mother.

“She needs an ambulance now,” the woman demanded. When Hunger told her the ambulance did come to the scene, checked the woman and declared her okay, the woman remained persistent and said, “No, she has to go.”

The driver’s daughter told Hunger the older woman has a medical condition and she takes a lot of pain medications; she’s also scheduled for surgery.

“She needs to go,” the woman repeated. “She’s not in her right mind.”

Hunger told the woman he would speak to her momentarily, and then proceeded to explain that the driver officially stopped on the 6th property, and damaged three properties on the opposite side of the street from where she stopped.

The driver will be cited for unsafe speed.

Using the daughter as a witness to prosecute her mother by using her declaration that she was an impaired driver due to taking pain medicines, why didn't they lock her up for DUI ? ? ?
