Man Dies in Head-On Crash with Semi Near Big Lake

A Victoria man was killed when he caused a head-on collision with a truck tractor pulling a semi-trailer 18 miles north of Big Lake Tuesday.

According to the Texas DPS, Raul C. Gutierrez, 35, of Victoria, was traveling northbound on Ranch Road 33, but driving on the wrong side of the road in a 2009 Suzuki Equator pickup. Fast approaching from the north, a southbound 2001 Freightliner truck, driven by David Lee Ward, 51, of Dallas, did not have time to maneuver out of the way.

The two vehicles met, head-on.

Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene by Reagan County Justice of the Peace Judge Patty Creech.

DPS reported that the crash occurred in night conditions, at 2:42 a.m. The roadway was dry.
