Knickerbocker Crash Caught on Video Tape

A brown Chevy pickup and a black Chevy Equinox were involved in a crash at 7:15 p.m. on Knickerbocker Road at Red Bluff Road Friday evening. Northeast-bound lanes on Knickerbocker were blocked for approximately 45 minutes.

According to video surveillance film captured by one of the security cameras, the brown Chevy pickup was southbound on Red Bluff, and at the Knickerbocker stop sign attempting to turn left, or northeast. The black Equinox was southwest-bound at normal speeds. The speed limit is 55 mph on Knickerbocker.

The pickup driver did not see the black Equinox and pulled out in front of it. The Equinox hit the front, left side of the Chevy truck at a high rate of speed.

San Angelo Police Officer John Bouligny (Lake Division) investigated the crash. He cited the driver of the Chevy truck for failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign.

No one was injured and the ambulance left the scene empty.

Deon Aylor, the owner the Eskimo Hut at the Lake said that the intersection is becoming more and more dangerous.

“During the big events this summer, starting Easter, really, July 4 is the worst. They’re [cars] sitting here for hours. It’s such a high traffic area. We see wrecks like this all the time,” Aylor said.

Aylor said the last fatality she recalls was about 13 years ago when there was a motorcycle crash at the same location. She said she wants TxDOT to consider a traffic light at Knickerbocker and Red Bluff Road.

Actually, COSA needs to cut Southwest Blvd. across from Twin Mountain Dr. to Red Bluff Rd. and put the light at Knickerbocker & Twin Mountain. Traffic would be better served with a school and a larger neighborhood (plus a shortcut for Red Bluff residents), but that makes too much sense to happen.

Mike is right about that. It could be a dirt road and it would be better than the current condition of Red Bluff. Voted #3 on San Angelo's worst road list? However, we don't want to improve the lake access and facilities, it might generate revenue. Might even justify the tax rates out there........won't happen.
