Police: Unlicensed, Uninsured Driver Runs Red Light, Sends Two to Hospital

An unlicensed and uninsured driver of a red Ford Explorer totaled a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse on the frontage road to the westbound side of the Houston Harte Expressway at Howard Street Tuesday afternoon, police said.

According to what witnesses told police, the Explorer had a red light, but disregarded it. Meanwhile the Eclipse was traveling through the intersection on green.

The two vehicles met in the intersection. The force of the impact sent the Eclipse careening into the front lawn of a home on the northwest side of the intersection.

The Explorer driver drove a block and a half away from the crash scene and was found at Waco and Wichita Street.

Officer Loudermilk of the San Angelo Police Department said that he was not charging the Explorer driver with hit-and-run because he didn’t try to run from the location around the corner once police arrived. It was a judgment call, Loudermilk said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was transported to Shannon Medical Center with non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the Explorer asked to be transported to Shannon as well after learning his fate with the citations: No license, no insurance, and failure to yield the right-of-way.

The crash happened just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.
