San Angelo police are directing traffic near the frontage roads at the intersection of the Houston Harte Expressway and North Bryant Ave. Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., an over-sized truck collided with the traffic signal over the railroad north of the Houston Harte on N. Bryant.
Traffic police issued a general alert to avoid Houston Harte at 7th Street.
Police are pursuing the truck with the oversized load. Our reporter said that the truck was northbound on Bryant.
We will update this story when more information is available.
Update 6:15 p.m.
The police have stopped the truck pulling the oversized load. It is a tank. It was stopped on FM 2105 near Grape Creek Rd.
Update 6:30 p.m. (Final)
According to San Angelo Police Department Traffic Investigator Brian Bylsma, the oversized load was permitted to travel through San Angelo. The permit allowed the truck to haul the load down Freeland to Bryant, and travel north on North Bryant until out of town.
“He never saw the railroad crossing lights,” Bylsma said.
According to Bylsma, traffic police were in the immediate area and were able to catch up with the driver of the truck and escort the load out of town.
Bylsma said that the permit is issued by TxDOT. “He was within his limits according to the permit,” Bylsma said.
North Bryant Ave. northbound at the railroad crossing will be reduced to one lane at least while TxDOT repairs the lights.
Bylsma said there were no citations issued.
