Driver Lives After Fiery Crash into Lipan Creek on U.S. 87

A passenger vehicle, likely an SUV, exploded into flames after running off the road and into Lipan Creek, which is just south of Roberts Road on U.S. 87 near Wall. The 911 call came at 4:45 a.m.

The Tom Green County Sheriiffs Department and the Wall VFD responded to the call.

The center lanes on both sides of US 87 on the Bridge were closed as first responders tended to the scene. The Wall VFD quickly extinguished the flames. One occupant of the vehicle, the driver, was rushed to a local hospital via ambulance. At the scene, it did not appear to be any other occupants in the vehicle. The condition of the driver is unknown.

Sheriff's deputies are investigating the crash. Initial speculation is that the driver fell asleep and ran off the road just before the double four-lane bridges, crashing below in the creek bank between the north and south bridge structures. We believe the driver was able to make the 911 call.

We will update the story as more information becomes available.
