Two Killed in Crash on TX-158 Near Garden City

Two women were killed in a crash on the Texas 158 highway just west of Garden City. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, both fatalities were passengers in a 2006 Kia Sorento.

The crash happened at 6:40 p.m. Sunday when the driver of the Sorento, heading northbound on TX-137, pulled out in front of westbound 2012 GMC Yukon SUV on TX-158. The Yukon didn’t stop in time and crashed into the passenger side of the Kia where the two victims were seated.

Glasscock County Justice of the Peace Kay MacHicek pronounced Maria Gomez, 37, from Mount Pleasant, dead at the crash scene. Elsa Gomez, 57, of Mexico, died at Midland Memorial Hospital a short time later. The driver, Maria Moncada, 61, of Mount Pleasant, suffered non-incapacitating injuries.

The driver of the Yukon, Kathy Freeman, 58, of Midland, was not injured in the crash.

DPS reported that all victims of the crash were wearing seatbelts. The weather was cloudy and dry. It was nighttime.

TX-158 serves as a popular throughway between San Angelo via Sterling City and Midland. Construction crews have been widening that portion of the road over the past several weeks. Construction was not mentioned as a cause of this crash, however. The road the Kia was traveling upon, TX-137, is a popular route to travel between Big Lake and Midland.

Trooper Robert Carson IV, Highway Patrol, Big Spring, was the investigator.
