WATCH: Balmorhea Ends Richland Springs' Bid At 10th State Title
SAN ANGELO, TX -- After waiting almost a month due to COVID-19 the Balmorhea Bears put on a show at San Angelo Stadium to upset the 9-time state champion Richland Springs Coyotes in Tuesday's Class 1A Division II State Championship.
Balmorhea's production of 519 yards of total offense led by the game's offensive MVP Gary Alex Abraham who chimed in with 4 catches for 144 yards and 4 touchdowns proved to be the difference in Tuesday's title game.
Defensively the Bears were on point. The Coyote's 38 points were the lowest turnout of the postseason for a team who's averaged better than 58 points per game in four playoff games. The difference-maker for the Balmorhea defense was senior defensive lineman Sean Orozco who finished the game with 4 sacks and was named the game's defensive MVP.
The 74-38 win over Richland Springs marked Balmorhea's first state championship in program history.
