WATCH: Instant Classic Finish Sends Sterling City To State Championship

SWEETWATER, TX -- Down 32-16 at the half and unable to score in the third quarter a state title appearance looked gloom for the Sterling City Eagles on Saturday night as they battled five-time state champion Borden County at the historic Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater.

Following back-to-back Sterling City scoring drives in the fourth quarter, the Eagles would surrender Borden County's only touchdown of the second half with less than a minute left in the Class 1A State Semifinal Game.

On Sterling City's ensuing drive Cross Knittle would connect with Damian Calderon for a Sterling City touchdown with seven seconds left in the contest. It came down to the foot of Raul Sanchez who booted the extra point attempt to send the game to overtime.

In the OT Borden County chose to go on defense first. Sterling City senior running back Cross Knittle made the Coyotes pay on a 32-yard touchdown run to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.

On the next Borden County possession, it would come down a 4th down in which Trey Edwards would connect with Ky Edwards but immediately met by Chance Ferguson to end the game giving Sterling City the 48-40 win in overtime and sending the Eagles to the program's first state title game since 2010.

Sterling City moves on to face May in the Class 1A Division I State Championship on Wednesday, December 16th at ATT Stadium in Arlington.
