Brent Davis Press Conference: "There's no gimmes in this district."
SAN ANGELO, TX — The main theme in Coach Brent Davis' press conference Tuesday was team growth.
One of the first questions of the presser focused on the ever-improving junior wide-out Jalen Leifeste (0:35). Leifeste has become a valuable contributor offensively as of late and had another impressive performance against Abilene with several big catches and a touchdown grab.
"You know he's getting better and better," Davis said. "He's really coming around now. [He's] catching the ball better and getting up the field right when he does. He's really becoming a big player for us. He had a great catch in this last game that set up a touchdown for us."
Davis also answered questions on the Abilene game as a whole (beginning of the video) and gave his opinions on whether or not this was Central's most complete game (3:30).
"I thought it was an overall team win. I thought our defense played fantastic against a good running football team... Offensively, we moved the ball. It wasn't at will by any means. Abilene has one of the better defenses in this district, but when we had opportunities we took advantage of them."
Looking ahead, Davis discussed the most dangerous aspect of the Richland Rebels (4:15). "They are hard to handle. They are athletic, they get after you, and they have a good scheme... Their record ain't great, but they've been [competitive] in all their games. They're a lot better than their record."
"We always have trouble with that [athleticism]. I mean, you saw us against Shoemaker. When we play those types of teams it's hard for us."
At the 1:15 mark of the video, Davis was asked about parody within the district and the opportunities it presents.
"If we can win out, which isn't easy because we have three tough games left, then we get a share of the title. Depending on what happens with Weatherford and Trinity we might even have a shot at a home playoff game," said Davis.
Watch the video above for the rest of Davis' comments. The coach went into detail about Richland running back Brandon Johnson (6:10), respecting opponents with weak records, "There's no gimmes in this district" (6:40), and more on how his team has improved from week one, specifically gaining experience, tackling, and the offensive unit as a whole (7:20).
Central will travel to Richland on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Birdville ISD Complex.
