Brent Davis Press Conference: "I'm disappointed in the loss, but not in the growth of our football team."

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Central Bobcats had the game in the palm of their hands on Friday night, only to have it slip away in the final minutes.  Central had a 14 point lead with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter, but the Timberwolves forced overtime after a touchdown, onside kick recovery, and another score.

Central fumbled on the second play of OT, and watched Cedar Park end the game on a run up the middle.

While some might see this as a disheartening loss, others, including Head Coach Brent Davis, are more optimistic.

“I’m disappointed in the loss and how we lost and that we didn’t finish the game.  But I’m not at all disappointed in the growth of our football team,” Davis clarified.  “I think we’ve got a pretty good team. If we can stay healthy, and that’s a big ‘if’ for everybody, but if we can stay healthy I think we have a chance to do something in the district and be really competitive.”

Davis also stressed how talented a team Cedar Park was and how well his squad played to even be in a position to win.  One player in particular who had a major role was Bradey Allen. The positionless lineman slid over to center last week in an effort to minimize the impact of Louisiana Tech commit Ben Bell.

Bradey has seen action at defensive line, left guard, and now center, which will most likely be his final move, according to Davis.  When asked about Allen’s impact, Davis responded, “He’s super crucial to our entire football team. He played a lot of defense for us, too, and that’s tough to do at this level, but he did it.  He played extremely well. He handled the nose [Bell] real well.”

Junior wide-out Jalen Leifeste also received some praise as a player who has raised eyebrows.  He has seen extended action recently and made several catches against Cedar Park that kept drives going.

Looking past Cedar Park, the Bobcats will make the 400 mile drive to Pebble Hills in El Paso on Friday.  The game is slated for a 5:00 PM kickoff and will take the players out of school and on the road for a majority of the day.  Davis does not see the travel as an issue, though. “We’ll leave Friday morning, nothing different really, we’ll just be gone all day… The game’s early.  We’ll get there, play that thing, and hopefully get home before 2 or 3 in the morning.”

As for the actual competition they will be facing, Davis mentioned similarities between Cedar Park’s quarterback and Pebble Hill’s, “He was really good.  He’s a lot like the guy we just played. He’s fast, throws the ball well, and is elusive.”

You can hear the rest of Davis’ comments above.  The coach dismissed rumors regarding Malachi Brown and touched on his experience with long-time announcer Sonny Cleere. He also went into further depth on the games against Cedar Park and Pebble Hills.
