STERLING CITY, TX - The Sterling County Courthouse graces the cover of the November 2024 issue of Texas County Progress, a business publication dedicated to Texas county government.
The issue, themed “Jails and Criminal Justice Spotlight,” highlights the historic courthouse alongside articles on county resolutions and veteran services in Wichita County.
Built in 1938 in a Texas Renaissance style with Art Deco influences, the Sterling County Courthouse was partially funded through a $45,000 Works Progress Administration grant and valued at $85,000 at the time of its construction. Previous courthouses, dating back to the late 1800s, included a frame structure and a stone building, according to the article in the magazine.
Sterling County, named after surveyor and buffalo hunter W.S. Sterling, is steeped in history, with early settlements dating back to the 1800s. Historical accounts describe the region as a hunting ground for Native American tribes and later as a grazing area for cattle ranchers.
The issue also details the efforts of early settlers, who relied on the region’s resources for ranching and later oil production, which remains a cornerstone of the county’s economy today.
