SAN ANGELO, TX – Tom Green County Commissioners Tuesday morning proposed a property tax rate which is the same as FY2021 during their regular meeting.
The court voted unanimously to propose a tax rate of .54980 per $100 in property value which is the same rate as last year. After the Texas Legislature made changes to the way counties, cities and school districts develop a tax rate, there are two rates which would trigger additional requirements.
According to the court, "If the proposed rate exceeds the lower rate of the no-new-revenue rate or the voter approval rate, then schedule a public hearing on the proposed rate and a meeting to adopt the tax rate."
The no-new-revenue rate for Tom Green County for FY2022 is .53231 and the voter approval rate is .55344. The voter approval rate used to be called the rollback rate where voters could request an election to approve or deny the proposed tax rate. Now, if the County were to propose a tax rate exceeding the voter approval rate, an election on the tax rate would be automatic.
The Commissioner's Court's proposed tax rate of .54980 falls between the no-new-revenue rate of .53231 and the voter approval rate of .55344 so the Court is mandated to hold a public hearing on the tax rate and then set a date and time to adopt the tax rate.
The public hearing on the proposed FY2022 tax rate for Tom Green County is Thursday, Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioner's Court meeting room on the second floor of the Keyes Building downtown.
The public meeting to adopt the tax rate is the regular Commissioner's Court Meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at 8:30 a.m. in the Commissioner's Court Meeting room in the Keyes Building.
