Tools and equipment are the most common items stolen, but the sheriff said that the most uncommon stolen item seeking reclamation tomorrow is a rocket launcher. The AT-4 shoulder-fired anti-armor weapon was probably recovered in a case within the City of San Angelo. “Well, it’s inert, but I found it to be an interesting piece,” Jones said.
Sheriff David Jones is hopeful much of the unclaimed stolen property finds a home tomorrow at the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office unclaimed property event scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2.
“We want to return as much stuff as we can,” Sheriff Jones said.
Many if the items came from within the city, and some of it originated out in the county. “We’ve already returned a lot of this stuff to county residents,” Jones said.
Most of the items remain unclaimed because there are no identifying marks. “A lot of these items came out of City of San Angelo cases where we don’t have access,” Jones said.
If you see your property and want to claim it, you will need to bring something to identify what is yours. The sheriff said his team will work with everyone to make sure the items are returned to the rightful owner.
“Most of the items originated from three search warrants and my guys have done a great job of recovering stolen property,” Jones said.
The items on display in a preview Monday morning were welders, ATVs, generators, saws, power tools, small tools, compressors, all kinds of stolen equipment, and even a pair of Lucchese boots. “They are very expensive,” the sheriff said.
All items left unclaimed will be referred back to a judge who will determine the final disposition of the stolen items.
To view and reclaim property from the sheriff’s showing tomorrow, show up between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and bring some type of proof of ownership—receipts with serial numbers, copies of court cases proving the loss, or etc. The event will be held at the Tom Green County 4H Building, 3168 U.S. 67 north on Feb. 2 from 9-4 p.m.
