Time: 7:30 p.m.
Reports are coming in from law enforcement that many bridges on major arteries leading into and out of San Angelo are freezing. Of particular note is U.S. 87 north, towards Grape Creek and Carlsbad. Light sleet was reported in Grape Creek at 6:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Light snow has fallen in parts of Tom Green County, including at Mathis Field. Temperatures are already in the 20s (F) and will remain there, and precipitation is in the forecast.
Further north, conditions are getting much worse.
The Abilene Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) issued a notice that the following roadways are already impassible:
- IH-20 in Taylor, Callahan, Nolan, and Mitchell Counties.
- US-84 in Taylor, Nolan, and Scurry Counties.
- US-277 in Taylor and Jones Counties.
- TX-70 in Nolan County.
TxDOT crews in Abilene are treating structures and roads for ice accumulation, according to the office there. As of 7:30 p.m., the only road closures reported have been north of Tom Green County near Big Spring and Abilene. Here is a current interactive map of road closures from TxDOT centered on San Angelo.
No school closings have been reported in the Tom Green County area yet. We will keep this story updated if official reports come in.
Update 7:45 p.m.
San Angelo NWS issued the following Alert:
...An area of light snow moving east across west central texas...
At 7:33 p.m. an area of light snow extended from San Angelo to Coleman and will continue to move east and impact areas mainly north of a line from Eden to Brady to San Saba. The snow should end by 10 p.m. A very light accumulation or a dusting of light snow is expected before the precipitation ends by 10 p.m.
You are urged to slow down and use extreme caution as you approach bridges and overpasses tonight into tomorrow morning. Some of the wetness from the snow may create some patchy areas of ice on bridges and overpasses tonight.
Update 10:00 p.m.
