At 4:05 p.m. Monday, June 2, Tom Green County Sheriffs Deputies were dispatched to 15202 Sutton Road, for a report of a shooting. Two victims were located by deputies at March Rd and Hwy 87. The two victims have been identified as Cathleen T. Hughes, 64, mother of the suspect and Theodore A. Hargrove, 64, both of San Angelo.
Both victims were transported with injuries sustained during the incident to Shannon Medical Hospital via ambulance. Cathleen Hughes was admitted and taken into surgery. Theodore Hargrove was admitted for observation and released this morning.
At approximately 11:10 pm, A SWAT operation was initiated on a residence located on the property. Gas canisters were deployed into the residence causing the suspect to exit the residence, at which time he was taken into custody without incident. No one was injured during the operation.
The suspect has been identified as Gabriel Hughes, 31 of San Angelo. Hughes has been charged with one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Family Member, Felony of First Degree and one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Felony of Second Degree. Hughes is currently being held in the Tom Green County Jail.
Tom Green County Sheriffs Office was assisted by San Angelo Police Department SWAT and Hostage Negotiations Team, Texas DPS and DPS Aircraft, Homeland Security, Customs Aircraft, Abilene Police Department Armor Personnel Carrier, and Texas Rangers.
The Tom Green County Criminal Investigation Division is currently'investigating the circumstances which lead to this incident.
Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon involving a family member is a first-degree felony punishable by 5-99 years imprisonment and an optional fine of up to $10,000. Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon is a second-degree felony and is punishable by 2-20 years imprisonment and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
