Passenger Thrown from Chevy Truck in Early Morning Crash Near Dove Creek

A gray 2004 Chevy Silverado was speeding through a construction zone on Knickerbocker Rd. near Dove Creek at 6:24 a.m. this morning. That is when the combination of speed, caliche, and the handling characteristics of 2004-era Chevys aligned to cause the pickup to crash and roll over, DPS said.

According to DPS, Brittany Coors, 23, was traveling at an unsafe speed through Commissioner Bill Ford’s construction zone on Knickerbocker. She lost control, and ran off the road. The Chevy came to rest on the truck’s driver’s side (and door) after a half roll.

Coors sustained minor injuries and was transported to Shannon Medical Center.

Her passenger, Hunter Smith, 23, was ejected from the truck during the crash, and also was taken to Shannon via ambulance.

Both occupants were issued citations for not wearing seatbelts. Coors was given an additional citation for traveling at an unsafe speed.

Knickerbocker Rd. east of Dove Creek is currently being repaved and is marked with construction signs. The asphalt pavement has been stripped away from that portion of the road leaving only caliche. That was a contributing factor to this crash, DPS said. The speed limit through the construction zone is marked 30 m.p.h.

Trooper Diaz was the investigator.

Speeding is a constant problem all over San Angelo and the county. There was another accident out there last Thursday that was not reported involving unsafe speed. That accident involved a pedestrian that almost got ran down due to a motorist traveling way over the posted speed limit of 55mph. People are getting so selfish anymore. They just don't care who they hurt. The attitude is get out of the way or get plowed down. You need to realize that machine you are driving is a powerful thing that can go out of control at a moments notice and hurt you and everyone around you. Please think people. Standing at a graveside or someone standing at yours is too late to have a reality check. God bless everyone. Let's all try to be more kind to one another today on the roads.
I'm not familiar with this particular piece of road consutruction, but I hear it's been going on for quite some time now. While speed and lack of risk management on the occupants' part is NO excuse, could this have been mitigated if the road construction were completed in a timely manner?

You can get construction updates and progress through Tom Green County web site. The construction is the second phase on that road. It is also not the only construction going on in the county. Tom Green County is not TXDOT. There are fewer employees. This crew works very hard and is spread very thin over a very large County. They usually have multiple projects going on at a time. KUDOS to that Department! This accident was caused by a motorist speeding. Not anyones fault BUT the one operating the vehicle. PERIOD.
