Standoff Subject's Facebook Wall Tells Tale of Emotional Despair

At 7:08 p.m. Wednesday, San Angelo Police responded to a call from another agency concerning a subject making threats to harm himself.

According to SAPD Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Hernandez, the initial agency had been dealing with the subject for reports of telephone harassment. Upon locating the subject, 20-year-old Derrik Juarez, he began making threats to harm himself.

Inmate booking reports from the Tom Green county Jail list Juarez as having been arrested and booked at 12:37 a.m. for fleeing from an officer and driving while license invalid.

Juarez posted a picture on his own Facebook wall at approximately 8:00 p.m. Wednesday bearing the caption, “Shoot me I’m ready”. The picture was shot out of the driver’s side window of a vehicle, and an SAPD patrol unit can be seen in the reflection of the side mirror with its door open.

Other posts on Juarez’s Facebook wall from the past two days depict a tale of despair and sorrow, seemingly revolving around emotional troubles with family, a possible girlfriend and a child.

The standoff, which lasted approximately two hours and from the photo appears to have at least begun in a car, ended around 9:00 p.m., Lt. Hernandez said.

Hernandez said no one was injured in the standoff and has not yet released any further information pertaining to the incident.

Typically, when the subject of a call has threatened to harm himself or commit suicide, police determine that the subject is suicidal and turn him over to mental health deputies.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Update 2:34 p.m. from SAPD press release:

A 20-year-old man was arrested after he led police on a low-speed chase that ended with a standoff near a park in north San Angelo last night.

On Wednesday, April 16, just after 7:00 p.m., a representative from the Winters Police Department contacted San Angelo Public Safety Communications to request assistance with locating a man who was the subject of a Telephone Harassment Investigation.  The man, identified as Derrik Juarez (DOB 11-15-93), was allegedly threatening to do harm and may have had a weapon with him.  Winters Police further advised dispatch that Juarez was currently in San Angelo, driving a maroon colored Ford Focus.

Winters Police continued to update San Angelo Police about Juarez’s potential whereabouts and during a search of the area, officers located Juarez’s vehicle traveling near 19th and Chadbourne Street.  Officers activated their patrol units’ lights and sirens in an attempt to stop Juarez, however, Juarez refused to stop and led police on a low-speed chase that ended in a parking lot in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Blvd, adjacent to Martin Luther King Park.

Officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender with Juarez, however, Juarez refused to exit his vehicle and made several verbal threats towards officers.  Out of concern for the park patrons’ safety, police called for the evacuation of the park for the duration of the incident.

Winters Police Officers arrived at the location, and after several hours of negotiations, Juarez surrendered without further incident.  A Tom Green County Sheriff Deputy assisted with the incident as well.  A weapon was never located.

While en route to the Tom Green County Jail, Juarez complained of an injury and was subsequently transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance.  After his release from medical care, Juarez was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with Fleeing a Police Officer and Class B Misdemeanor Driving While License Invalid with Previous Conviction.

Shoot yourself, you freaking coward. Stop making cops responsible for your weakness. Get a job and you won't have time to be so self-indulgent.
Mr. Juarez was having a bad day--and so the world needed to stop turning. We all needed to recognize his mundane little family drama as something of great importance, so much that public safety and the lives of our officers took a backseat to this insignificant brat's grievances. The stand off was obviously more about Mr. Juarez's need for a public platform--a "notice me" moment. Those who merely threaten suicide and attempt to taunt police into killing them aren't interested in dying, they're simply playing to the emotions of anyone stupid enough to feel sorry for them.
Lets leave the diagnosis to professionals. I am thankful for law enforcement doing a great job working together and keeping the peace.
hey bro... next time go for the net triple play. first post your probs and dirty laundry on facebook... then to twitter and tweet "the cops are after me and i want to hurt myself with my pretend weapon"... next to youtube... where a video of that awesome low speed case would have gone viral and made you a net sensation... i am going to retract calling you bro, because its an honor to be one of my bros... seriously man get it together! ...
