Water Valley Boys Basketball Team Recognized at City Council Meeting

The Water Valley Boys Basketball Team was formally recognized for their recent at City Council Tuesday, in a small deviation from the regular agenda. The invitation to attend the Council meeting follows a recent win that made Water Valley state champions, a first for the district in history.

In gratitude for the recognition received from Council, one of the coaches presented Mayor Dwain Morrison with a gold medal, which he immediately put proudly around his neck. “It’s the first thing I ever won,” Morrison said.

After brief storytelling from the championship game, the players and cheerleaders introduced themselves and their positions.  Mayor Morrison promised as the students left the room, “We’ll bring you back next year, when you win the next one.”

Going back to the agenda, Mayor Morrison declared March 27 as the West Texas Hunger Summit. The event is slated to be the first ever, not only for San Angelo, but of the 12 regions involved in the initiative. Several topics are planned to be included in the summit, such as payday loans for the needy and a discussion of the “food dessert”, which could be described as a lack of access to food due to lack of money, transportation or other contributing factors.

The keynote speaker of the event will present on asset-based community development, which was described as a method of finding strengths in a community from a top view, looking into the community itself.  Registration is $10 and all segments of the community are invited to attend.

March 23-29 was declared Boys and Girls Club week in the City of San Angelo. There are currently approximately 4,000 members that regularly attend the club, and a member of the board emphasized the need of community involvement for the club to function. “It takes a whole community to raise a child,” he said. “We need your support.”

City staff and local architect firm Kinney Frank Architects were presented with the Park Design Excellence Award at the Texas Recreation Park Society Institute and Expo in Corpus Christi for their work on the Concho River Improvements Project.
