Commissioners Court to Discuss Burn Ban and Library Expansion

The Tom Green County Commissioner’s Court will meet Tuesday Jan. 7 for the first time in 2014. As it is the first meeting of the year, there will be many items on the agenda to consider.

Larry Justiss, Director of the Tom Green County Library, will present a revision of the fine and fee schedule for the Court’s consideration.

“We have changed the way our overdue notices are sent out,” said Justiss. “We are letting people be notified quicker, and all fines and fees will remain the same.”

House Bill 2902 authorizes county libraries to authorize civil penalties for lost or damaged properties.

“If they fail to get materials returned we can now file a civil suit,” Justiss explained. Discussing the matter in Commissioners Court will get everyone on the same page should the Tom Green County Library need to pursue a civil suit.

The Court will also consider remodeling issues with the Judge Edd B. Keyes Building and the Library Expansion. Related is consideration of a new meeting location for the Commissioner’s Court for calendar year 2014.

One item, especially important this time of year, is the County Burn Ban. With one grassfire within the city limits this year already, this issue is already a hot topic.

A contract from Shannon Clinic to provide a Nurse Practitioner for medical services at the county jail is also on the table to be discussed and/or accepted.

The Vancourt property sale issues will be discussed, as well as possible approval of RV Plat Applications from J-N-M Properties in Carlsbad.

The official 2014 appointees to the court will also be discussed Tuesday.
