New Year's at the Nature Center

Spiders, snakes and lizards oh my!

Whether scaly, furry or creepy-crawly, a number of animals can be found at the San Angelo Nature Center. Bobcats, skunks, prairie dogs and rabbits are among those that call the center home.

Because of the sheer amount of animal-related activities offered, including overnights, such as the upcoming New Year's sleepover, the Nature Center has become a local favorite among animal-loving kids.

“We play games, do a couple crafts and even let the kids play with some of our animals,” said Kat Bunker, naturalist at the Nature Center of the approaching sleepover. “We also take a photo of them with an animal as a souvenir of sorts.”

While making crafts and taking pictures with animals are fun, the biggest hit of the night is playing with animals, Bunker says.

“We have the kids circle up and we let the ferrets out to play,” said Bunker. “Wolfie and Bandit love to play with toys.”

They also let out Singe, the black and white rabbit, after the ferrets are put up.

“Many of our animals used to be pets, so a lot of them are friendly and nice,” said Bunker.

When those activities are over, they break out the flashlights to observe the nocturnal creatures, like the Bobcats, and even help feed the animals.

The volunteers provide the ingredients and the menus for the animals, and the kids get to put together the food bowls and deliver the feasts.

“If they’re a good, calm group, we might even feed the snakes,” Bunker explained.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Nature Center Sleepover without a little bit of education.

“We make a little game out of what they learn,” Bunker mentioned, and the night wraps up with a light snack and animal movie marathon until all campers are asleep.

Currently there are 10 spots open for the sleepover, though Bunker mentioned that the Nature Center is willing and able to host a slumber party year round if there is a demand.

Be it birthdays or scout groups, a minimum of four is necessary for a night of fun frolicking with furry friends.

“At $25 dollars, you won’t find a cheaper or more exciting babysitter,” Bunker said with a laugh.

The New Year's Sleepover is from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. with a light snack and breakfast provided.

The cost is $25 for Nature Center members and $35 for non-members. All fees must be paid by Dec. 29.
