San Angelo Endures Winter Storm

A winter storm brought freezing temperatures, freezing rain and sleet to the San Angelo region Friday morning. The ice storm, which consumed most of Texas and all the way through the Midwest, arrived in full force Thursday afternoon. As temperatures dropped into the evening, wet roads became hazards covered with black ice.

San Angelo Police reported 11 traffic accidents overnight. The City of San Angelo announced it was sanding some roads and bridges early yesterday evening.

The City and Tom Green County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve Mild urged citizens to not drive on the roads until the ice is cleared.

Whether the icy conditions will subside depends, in part, on the freezing temperatures rising high enough to melt the ice. National Weather Service forecasts that temperatures in the Concho Valley will not rise above 32 degrees Friday, and will drop lower, to 17 degrees overnight and into Saturday morning. Relief may not come until Sunday, when the high is forecast to be 51 degrees.

AEP of Texas, who maintains the power grid in San Angelo reported no power outages Friday morning.
