Steve Floyd Sworn in As County Judge

Tom Green County ushered in a new era on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., when Steve Floyd was sworn in as TGC Judge by judges Howard and Buck.

An estimated 30 people had squeezed into the small Commissioners Court meeting room, a mix of family, friends and coworkers who had shown up in support.

Following the ceremony, which including a swearing in with his hand place upon the bible and several signatures to make his position official, Floyd addressed those present with gratitude and humbleness.

“The amount of support and encouragement I’ve received over the past few weeks is somewhat overwhelming. I will admit, I’m a little bit intimidated with this daunting task that’s ahead,” Floyd said.

“I’m a firm believer in peer pressure, and I look around this room and see elected officials, past, present, and probably future that makes Tom Green County so blessed. When you’re surrounded with that kind of people, it makes it kind of hard to fail when everybody’s on the same mission.”

The ceremony comes at a hard time for the Floyd family, who very recently lost Steve Floyd’s mother. Floyd broke up briefly during Sunday’s ceremony, but made it a point to honor his mother for the impact she’s had on his and his siblings’ lives.

“You’ve heard me say that I’m the third of five generations of Floyds that are here,” Floyd said, lowering his head briefly to fight back tears. “Second generation came to a blessed end a couple of days ago. I think that my brother Mike and my sister Patty will probably share that any character oF goodness in us can be directly attributed to [our mom].”

Floyd then looked to the future, calling upon the sense of stewardship his mother instilled in him, with an objective serve the community and to “pass it on to our successors in better shape than we found it.”

In closing, Floyd said. “We’ll just go on, and I can hear my mom saying, ‘Steven C., behave yourself.’ And I’ll do my best to do that.” The room broke up with laughter.

Following the ceremony, Floyd stated his intentions for the elections. “I have filed as of Monday and I do intend to lead a rigorous campaign,” he said.

For now, Floyd said his joy at having been appointed “is tempered through the death of my mom, but I will show up on Monday, now that I’ve got the keys and signed the papers, and I will do my job to the best of my ability.”

As the head of Tom Green County, Floyd names continuity and stewardship among his top-ranking traits, but also mentions the oil industry.

“[One of my biggest objectives while in office is] to capitalize on the opportunity we have in the oil boom while maintaining the quality of life we have come accustomed to,” Floyd says.

Floyd also mentioned addressing housing concerns and looking for water solutions as important issues for his campaign.
