Steve Floyd filed Monday to run for the Republican nomination for Tom Green County judge.
The Tom Green County Commissioners Court appointed Floyd to the office of county judge upon the retirement of Mike Brown. Floyd will be sworn in December 1 to fill the vacancy. Floyd will hold the appointed office until December 31, 2014.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Tom Green County the past 22 years, and I wish to continue,” Floyd said. “That means I need to win the election next year, and that is what I intend to do.”
The Republican primary is in March 2014 and the general election for the office is in November 2014. The elected judge will be sworn in January 2015.
Floyd served as Precinct 3 commissioner the past nine years. He served as a justice of the peace for 13 years prior to his election as a commissioner.
“I want the county to remain wise stewards of our tax money,” Floyd said. “We also need to explore how the county can participate in water solutions. We need to manage the impact of the oil boom to preserve our quality of life. I will continue to listen to the district courts and the county courts a law to address their needs. I will continue to support public safety issues dealing with the oil growth, such as the Tom Green County sheriff’s office commercial vehicle enforcement effort.
“Mike Brown did a good job putting the county’s house in order,” Floyd said. “I want to build upon that and look for new ways to meet new challenges. My service as a judge, commissioner, and owner/operator of a private business uniquely qualifies me for this next assignment.”
