In the past couple years, the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association (SASSRA) have partnered with Cinch for the Saturday finale of the annual stock show and rodeo.
The Cinch Shootout is not a Pro Rodeo Cowboy’s Association (PRCA) sanctioned rodeo event, hence the small outbreaks of rumors that SASSRA is not a member of PRCA anymore.
“We have been a part of PRCA Rodeo forever,” said Tom Thompson, Marketing Director of SASSRA, “it’s our intent to stay PRCA.”
“It’s a very fluid channel of communication between us and the PRCA.” he explained. “We actually met with them in Omaha a few weeks ago just to discuss our format and get our approvals for 2014.”
Everything is in order as far as approvals and Thompson mentioned that PRCA likes what San Angelo is doing, even allowing an increase from nine PRCA events to 11.
The Cinch Shootout is not PRCA, but was implemented to give San Angelo a big finale on Saturday’s after they had to move their finals back one day so that competitors didn’t have to choose between San Angelo and San Antonio.
“We moved it up one day, our PRCA final to a Friday, so a contestant could leave here on a Friday after our performance and get to San Antonio for their performance,” explained Thompson.
“I won’t say San Angelo demands, but it deserves a good Saturday performance,” stated Thompson.
Even though it’s only been in place since 2012, the Cinch Shootout is, besides the main San Angelo Rodeo, the most popular Rodeo event in San Angelo, selling out long before any others.
Despite not being an event that counts for PRCA winnings, the Cinch Shootout is invitation only, and a qualifying event for the Houston Shootout, the richest one-day rodeo in the world.
Now that rumors have been squashed, stay tuned for more information on the Cinch Roping Fiesta coming soon.
