SAN ANTONIO, TX – Texas-based grocer H-E-B has once again claimed the title of the best grocery retailer in the United States, according to dunnhumby’s Annual Retailer Preference Index (RPI).
This marks the fourth time in eight years that H-E-B has secured the top spot in the survey.
The 2024 rankings were based on responses from more than 11,000 consumers, evaluating 72 of the largest U.S. grocery retailers. The study focused on key factors including price, promotion, and customer rewards. H-E-B stood out for its savings, quality, shopping experience, and product selection.
Joining H-E-B in the top five were Market Basket, Costco, WinCo Foods, and Aldi, a mix of regional supermarkets and larger discount and club store formats. Amazon, a previous leader in the rankings, dropped to sixth place.
“This year’s RPI shows that the fundamentals still apply as H-E-B has proven year over year. Any format can win,” said Matt O’Grady, dunnhumby's President of the Americas. “The first step is to understand your customers and how customers perceive you. Secondly, prioritize efforts to save your customers money that is consistent with your positioning. And finally, use the RPI as a framework to help you determine where you should invest and where you should make tradeoffs.”
The survey also revealed a slight decline in the importance of digital shopping compared to previous years. Consumers ranked savings and loyalty programs as the most critical factors for grocery retailers, along with other pillars such as convenience and product availability.
