After 40 Years, Field and Streams Sporting Goods Makes Plans for Expansion

SAN ANGELO, TX — Cliff Wagnor is proud to see Field and Streams Sporting Goods still going strong 40 years after he helped start the business in 1984.

It’s doing well enough that he has finally decided to expand the store at 3812 W. Houston Harte Expressway

Wagnor said a 3,000-square foot addition should be ready by February or March next year .

“More than anything else, when we opened in 1984, it wasn’t a very big deal to have an upstairs. A lot of stores did,” Wagnor said. “But over the years, fewer have an upstairs, and a lot of people don’t like to go upstairs. And that’s where all the clothing is, so we’re going to bring it down and move it over in a lower area.

“And then the store has gotten pretty crowded over the years. We’re carrying an awful lot of products that are crammed in a smaller area, and we just need to spread out.”

Wagnor said they’re adding new bathrooms and dressing rooms as part of the remodel.

The extra space will also allow the store to display more items, such as gun safes.

“When we opened our store in ‘84, our gun rack had places for 40 guns, and we had almost everything on the market. Now we have over 1,000 guns on display, and we don’t have near what all is made,” Wagnor said. “The market has just exploded over the decades.”

Wagnor said he was 24 years old when he started the business with the help of his father and two older business partners.

They’ve all since passed on, and Wagnor is the sole owner.

His store manager, Glenn Stracener, has been a part of the business since it opened. Another employee, Joe Corder, worked for the company for 29 years before he died.

Wagnor said he’s proud Field and Streams has stood the test of time. His son, Carter, who is now 25, will one day take over the business for him.
