Cell Phone Service, AT&T Mostly Restored

NEW YORK, NY — A major outage was reported for customers of AT&T customers by the San Angelo Police Department this morning. By lunchtime, DownDetector indicated service has been mostly restored while the New York Times reported sporadic service still impacting California.

On Apple iPhones, the indicator your cellular connection isn’t operational is the “SOS” letters at the top right of your phone’s screen. In addition to west Texas, major outages are reported in most major metro areas of Texas, including DFW, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin for AT&T.

It appears that problems started at around 3 a.m. CST. According to Downdetector. Other reports show the outages began at 4 a.m.

An AT&T spokesman told the NY Times that the telecom behemoth was working on the problem. The spokesman did not reveal what the problem was. Spokesmen from other wireless carriers denied internal problems and suggested reports on DownReport about Verizon and T-Mobile (for example) disruptions were likely from their customers being unable to reach friends, family and business associates on the AT&T network.

DownDetector reported outages for Cricket, Verizon, Consumer Cellular, T-Mobile, Boost, U.S. Cellular, and Straight Talk. Downdetector was also reporting outages with some Google services like the Google Play Store.
