ERCOT Asks Texans to Conserve Power Tuesday Morning

AUSTIN, TX — In light of the prevailing winter storm gripping the entire state and with anticipated lower temperatures this evening and into tomorrow morning, ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) is issuing its second appeal in as many days for Texans to curtail electricity consumption on Tuesday, January 16, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. CT. The grid operator foresees heightened demand tomorrow morning as Texans return to work and schools resume operations.

This conservation request does not signify emergency conditions within ERCOT at present. However, ERCOT remains watchful and will communicate further if emergency operations become necessary due to sustained freezing temperatures and exceptionally high demand in the morning hours. As of now, any outages experienced are localized and unrelated to overall grid reliability. For more information on local outages, please consult your electric provider.

ERCOT Conservation Appeal Explained

An ERCOT Conservation Appeal is a plea to the people of Texas to decrease electrical usage, provided it is safe to do so. Conservation serves as a widely adopted industry tool to assist the grid by reducing demand for specific periods, typically during morning hours in the winter. This practice aids grid operators in balancing generation supply with customer demand.

Who Should Conserve?

ERCOT urges all Texans to diminish their electric usage on Tuesday, January 16, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. CT. Additionally, all government agencies, including city and county offices, are requested to implement energy reduction programs at their facilities.
