TxDOT Proposing Major Changes on FM-2288 to Grape Creek

SAN ANGELO – The Texas Department of Transportation San Angelo District is hosting a public meeting in Grape Creek Thursday to take public input on proposed major changes to FM-2288 between US-87 in Grape Creek and US-67 in San Angelo.

FM-2288 was in the news recently when the pavement of the roadway washed away from runoff created by clearing of land for Angelo Solar.  The vital highway was shutdown while crews repaired the pavement.

FM-2288 also has busy junctions with entrances to the rapidly growing Buffalo Heights subdivision which now has hundreds of houses accessible only from FM-2288 at Bison Trail and Gray Wolf Lane.

TxDOT is considering improvements to FM-2288 from US 87 to US 67 in the city of San Angelo to improve safety and mobility for all modes of traffic – vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle – along the 11.4-mile corridor. Proposed improvements include the full roadway reconstruction and widening from US 67 to north of Arden Road. This would allow for two through lanes for each direction, a two-way, left-turn lane or exclusive left turn lanes and right turn lanes where warranted.

Proposed improvements also include adding 8'-wide shoulders on both sides of the roadway and a continuous shared use path along the east side of the corridor. Drainage improvements, the addition of a curb and gutter section for the Grape Creek area between US 87 and Old Sterling City Hwy #1 and a new bridge structure at the North Concho River are also proposed. Existing and proposed right of way information is currently being determined for this project. The project is currently under schematic and environmental review with anticipated environmental clearance in February 2025.

TxDOT is providing an in-person public meeting option for individuals who would like to participate in person instead of online. In-person attendees will be able to view the same information delivered in the online public meeting, review hard copies of project materials, ask questions of TxDOT staff and/or consultants, and leave written comments. Attendees may come and go at their convenience; the formal presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The meeting will be held Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023 from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Grape Creek ISD Main Office, 8207 N US Hwy 87 in Grape Creek.

Comments will also be taken online through Nov. 17.
