SAN ANGELO— Lawnhaven Cemetery had a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new mausoleum at the cemetery east of San Angelo Thursday afternoon.
Johnson’s Funeral Home and Dignity Memorial held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly built mausoleum at Lawnhaven Cemetery.
“We are doing a ribbon cutting for our new mausoleum and our hedge estates,” Mary Ellen Gonzales, a family service manager with Dignity said, “In our mausoleum, we have niche spaces and burial entombment spaces and over here we have our hedge estates for two and four people.”
A niche in a columbarium or mausoleum is a compartment within the structure that holds a person’s cremated remains. The new mausoleum at Lawnhaven has 144 spaces that are open for anyone who may want an above ground burial.
The original mausoleum was built in the 1960’s and has been full for a while.
“We started looking at constructing another one and it was quite the undertaking,” Gonzales said, “Prints were drawn, and different things were talked about placement. Finally, it was settled on and then this was built last summer.”
As for the hedge estates, there is landscaping that will encompass the estates and they come with a head stone for two and for four people. This is all to give individuals going through the loss of a loved one options around burials.
“With the hedge estates, it’s a little bit different that your traditional burials,” said Gonzales, “A little bit more special and unique and so is the mausoleum. A lot of people have never seen a mausoleum… It’s just nice having that offering here in San Angelo.”
