Historic San Angelo Catering Company to Call It Quits After Nearly 50 Years

SAN ANGELO, TX – The owners of the longtime San Angelo catering company, McGowen's Catering, have decided after nearly half a century that the family will be retiring. Before they ride into the sunset though, Kelly McGowen is searching for his replacement at the well known Rio Concho Manor.

"As I have stated before, my brother and I have decided to retire and close our business. The management of Rio Concho Complex is looking for someone to come in and take over," stated McGowen in a Facebook Post. "Let me share some thoughts for someone who might be interested in doing this. It is really three businesses in one."

McGowen went onto list three reasons why working at Rio Concho was so wonderful and a great opportunity for others.

"First we have the dining room located here in the high rise which seats about 220 along with a recreation room that seats about 80. We have only been open at lunch but it is not confined to that. There are groups such as Lions and Kiwanis that meet here. We have served buffet style but again that was our way and not confined to that. Secondly there is Rio Concho Terrace located adjacent to the high rise where we serve 3 meals a day 365 days a year. So this makes for a steady income," stated McGowen. "Thirdly and what we are or should I say were known for was catering. The kitchen here is large and has a lot of equipment. We are leaving pretty much everything so someone can just walk and go at it with absolutely no overhead. There is maybe the largest freezer in west texas and 2 walkin fridges. Steamers, smokers, and all kinds of catering equipment."

The post finished by McGowen asking the public to share the information to help find the next chef.

"The lease is very fair and includes electricity, gas, water - pretty much everything but phone and internet. The equipment in the kitchen is maintained by management also," stated McGowen. "We have been here 45 years and it has been a great ride. If anyone out there is interested, please contact us or the management here and we would love to show you around. Pass this info along to anyone that might be interested."

The McGowen family has been in San Angelo for decades and have been providing food for citizens since 1942. At that time McGowen's grandfather owned a grocery store at what is now Mr. T's Deli.

The business turned into a catering company in the 70s and moved into the Rio Concho Manor in 1977.
