SAN ANGELO, TX – Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Walt Koenig to the Governor’s
Committee to Support the Military for a term to expire at the pleasure of the Governor.
The committee studies and makes recommendations on how to best maintain and enhance military
value at existing military installations in Texas and how to best make Texas a more attractive
destination for additional military missions.
Walt Koenig is President and CEO of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce. He is chairman of
the Economic Development Committee of the Concho Valley Workforce Development Board, a
member of the board of the Howard College Foundation and the San Angelo Metropolitan
Planning Board.
Prior government service includes 40 months as the lead economic development advisor for
the U.S. State Department in Southern Iraq. During his time in Iraq, Mr. Koenig earned the U.S.
Army’s Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, the U.S. Army Special Forces Certificate of
Appreciation, the U.S. State Departments Expeditionary Service Award, and the second highest
merit award in the U.S. State Department—the Superior Honor Award.
Additionally, Koenig served for 4 years as the Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy
in Kabul, Afghanistan where he worked to foster private business sector growth through
increased trade and investment in Afghanistan. His efforts resulted in hundreds of millions of
dollars of new business in Afghanistan.
Koenig received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from The University of Illinois,
Champaign-Urbana.
